Encouraging Creativity In Your Team
No-one's ever beaten the competition by standing still, and now more than ever, we need to be creative in most areas of business in order to get ahead and stay ahead. But how do you help your team to be creative?
People are not very creative animals
I'm sorry, it's true - we're not. There are reasons for this, mostly to do with our experiences at school, university and at work! If you're interested, ping me a message and I'll be happy to go into a little more detail with you on this, but let's just say that many of us (not all) need a little help to be more creative.
We've all got the creativity gene buried inside us somewhere - we just need a little help kick-starting it and using it productively in the workplace.
And that's where leaders come in. As a leader, it's your job to create the conditions for creativity to happen in your team in order for innovative ideas to come to the fore and have an impact in your workplace. With your customers. With your marketing approach. With your product development team. With everyone. In fact, people recognise this, because (at time of recording - 2024 - it's the second-most requested course over the past 12 months, just behind sales training).
Put restrictions on people to make them more creative
It might seem a little backwards, but you can help your team members to be more creative by putting restrictions on them. I like to think of it like this:
In order for people to think outside the box, you need to put them in a box to start with.
- Neil Shorney (that's me).
So, here's a video to help you think about the restrictions you could put on your team (and a couple of other creativity ideas) to set their inner Picasso loose...
