You might think that giving a presentation online is much the same as giving a presentation face-to-face, except that you don’t have the early start and the long commute. And you don’t get a nice coffee and croissant to start the day. And to an extent, that’s true – many of the things you’ve known for years about how to give an effective presentation stand true even when it’s a virtual presentation.
But there are some things that are very different with virtual presentations. Things like the reduced ability for you to see people’s body language. And the fact that professionals spend too much of their time sat watching virtual presentations in 2022 that they’ve become boring.
On the other hand, there are some things which are easier when presenting virtually – like the ability to have eye-contact with the whole audience at the same time (if you can remember to look at the camera), and the fact that no-one knows if you’ve got your notes in front of you!
So let’s just say that virtual presentations are different from face-to-face, and remember that we need to do things a little differently to effectively communicate our message virtually, and to engage the audience in an equivalent way to face-to-face.
So here’s a virtual presenting cheat sheet from Navanter Knowledge Bites – something you can use to remind you of all the things you need to do differently when giving a virtual presentation. You can download the engaging virtual presentations cheat sheet here.
